Graeme Souness thinks Harry Kane's ankle injury could leave Tottenham in a battle to finish in the top four.
Kane was injured in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, and it was announced on Monday that he would be sidelined until early March with damaged ligaments in his left ankle.
Tottenham are facing an increasingly busy fixture list and Kane will miss both legs of the last-16 tie with Borussia Dortmund in February.
Speaking on Sunday, before the extent of Kane's injury was revealed, Souness said on Sky Sports: "Without Harry, they risk not qualifying for the Champions League. It might force them to do something they thought they could do in the summer and who's available at this time of year?
"All of a sudden, you're buying under pressure. Clubs will know that Tottenham are under the cosh so the premiums will go up again. It's not a good place to be when you're trying to buy players under pressure."
Tottenham will also be without fellow forward Heung-Min Son for the next few weeks as he competes in the Asia Cup with South Korea, and Robbie Keane agrees that his former club need reinforcements.
He added: "They definitely need to get someone in, I would say in this window for a bit of back-up if he's out for a few weeks.
"You've got Llorente who is a great pro and he'll do a job for you but he's not a prolific goalscorer. Maybe it's time that Daniel [Levy] does something to help the squad out."
