Gary Neville says only Manchester City have ‘bettered’ one thing Daniel Levy has done at Tottenham

Daniel Levy has always divided opinion at Tottenham Hotspur and you feel that’s something that will never change.

It has been two decades since the English businessman has been in the Tottenham boardroom and the club has progressed under his stewardship.

One thing fans can’t argue about is the fact that Tottenham have become Champions League regulars, for the main part, for over ten years now, with the only downside being no trophies.

From club-record goalscorer Harry Kane to icon Gareth Bale. Some of the world’s best have donned the club’s colours, but they have never been able to get over the line.

Even when trophy-winning managers – Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte – have been in the dugout, they have fallen flat on their faces.

A lot of the time, the man taking the heat for it all has been Daniel Levy, whether he decides to spend nothing at all, on occasions, or club-record amounts on someone like Tanguy Ndombele.

One person who has constantly backed Levy has been Gary Neville, including the Manchester United legend once calling him ’the best operator in football’.

As you can imagine, with the lack of trophy success for Spurs, many of their supporters disagree with that, but it isn’t changing his opinion.

Other than Manchester City, Neville feels those at Hotspur Way have been the best at how they have ‘developed the stadium and the training ground’, as he told the Overlap.

But he acknowledged that, on the pitch, it just hasn’t been clicking or working the way fans want.

Tottenham’s stadium and training ground

“I said a few years ago, and it was criticised at the time, that I think he (Levy) is the best operator in football,” said Neville.

“If you look at what he has done off the pitch. There is no-one, apart from Manchester City with their endless cash that they have, has developed their stadium and training ground in the way in which Tottenham have. No-one. It’s unbelievable what he has done.

“The problem is that he has never got it right on the football side. He has always wanted to keep a tight reign on that side of it. If he let that go, which he probably won’t because he demonstrated he won’t and be allowed to take the shackles off a little bit, then there could be a chance they could challenge for the league. But I am not sure he will ever do that.”

Ange Postecoglou under Daniel Levy

Unlike the previous managers, it’s fair to say, the new man in the dugout is providing the supporters with hope.

Even though Harry Kane left days before the new season, Ange Postecoglou has still managed to bring a new sense of life and belief to the club.

From the team’s fearless, no-nonsense and expansive style of play to how he deals with the media on a weekly basis.

This is a man who fits Tottenham’s DNA perfectly and every single one of the fans are behind him.
