Tim Sherwood claims Tottenham will sell their ‘best midfield player’ along with Richarlison

Ange Postecoglou has called for changes at Tottenham Hotspur.

The team have suffered four defeats on the bounce in the Premier League and it seems his all-attacking style of play is proving to be too difficult for some.

You suspect there will be a few senior players being moved on, with journalist Darren Lewis claiming that club-record transfer Richarlison could be one of them and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Tottenham have splashed huge money on two players in recent years – Richarlison and Tanguay Ndombele – yet neither have delivered.

At least, with Richarlison, there is some life and he has vastly improved from his one Premier League goal from the previous campaign.

The Brazil star has 11 league goals from 28 matches and still counting. But he is still expected to go. Who will join him?

Tim Sherwood was keen to highlight Tottenham’s midfield area and it proving to be a concern during the second half of the campaign.

The former Blackburn captain stated that Spurs fans view Rodrigo Bentancur as their ‘best midfield player’, but he thinks ‘he will go’ in the summer, as he told Premier League Productions (06/05/24 at 2:45 pm).

Before the 26-year-old’s long-term knee injury, he was flying and bossing proceedings in the middle of the park and now he hasn’t been able to get that form back.

It would be harsh to show someone like Bentancur the door, but Sherwood thinks it’s going to happen.

Rodrigo Bentancur to leave Tottenham?

Darren Lewis claimed: “I think what’s going to happen at Spurs is four or five players are going to leave. I don’t think Richarlison has a long-term future at the club. Kulusevski has gone off the boil. There are one or two players in the midfield that I think are okay. Hojbjerg I think will go in the summer.”

“It looks like Bentancur will go,” added Sherwood. “If you asked Tottenham fans, they will tell you he is the best midfield player they have got. Bissouma was outstanding at the start of the season. They have all gone off the boil at the same time.

“Maddison, who was a revelation, not anymore.”

Daniel Levy needs to back Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have been in this situation many a time before. They need certain areas plugging in and some much-needed depth.

Yes, senior players might depart and some ruthless calls might be made. That’s football.

But the marmite-like figure Daniel Levy needs to back Postecoglou all the way. Spurs haven’t been competing in Europe, yet they have still drifted away during the second half of the season.

They will crumble in a worse fashion if they don’t bulk up the squad for next season and sign the niche players needed for Postecoglou’s system.

Destiny Udogie’s recent season-ending injury is a prime example of how if first-team players drop out, then there is a huge drop-off when the next man comes in.
