Glenn Hoddle admits one thing has shocked him about Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur

When Son Heung-min was made Tottenham Hotspur captain in the summer, it just felt right.

The 31-year-old is heading towards spending nearly a decade at Tottenham and he can rightfully call himself a club legend.

Back in 2015, then-Spurs-boss Mauricio Pochettino brought in the flying forward from German club Bayer Leverkusen.

Even Son Heung-min himself would admit that the first 12 months were very tricky and he could have headed for the exit door just as he entered it.

But Son stuck by it and has since gone on a journey that Tottenham fans will remember for decades and decades to come.

Glenn Hoddle described the versatile forward as a ‘fantastic’ player and someone who is ‘enjoying being captain’.

On Sunday, even though Ange Postecoglou watched his team suffer another morale-sapping defeat against Liverpool, it was Son’s 300th Premier League appearance.

He has scored a staggering and impressive 120 goals during that period and also supplied 61 assists – even better considering he hasn’t regularly played as a number nine.

But Hoddle did express his surprise at the number of matches Son has played for the club by sharing ‘I didn’t realise’ before lauding his talents, as he told Premier League Productions (05/05/24 at 4:20 pm).

Son Heung-min’s 300 Premier League appearances for Tottenham Hotspur

“He has had to play down the centre whilst Richarlison hasn’t been in good form or has been injured,” said Hoddle.

“That’s not his best position. We know his best position. Out on the left, cutting it and coming in from that position. But what player!

“Some of the gaols he has scored. Left foot, right foot and an incredible player. 300 appearances. That is a lot. I didn’t realise that he has played as many. He has done fantastic. What a player. He is skipper now and I think he is enjoying being captain of Tottenham and he would love to get into that top four.”

Will Son Heung-min end his career at Tottenham?

Son’s partner in crime, Harry Kane, didn’t end his career at Spurs, and instead, left in the summer for Bayern Munich in search of trophies.

That’s one major blot on the South Korean star’s CV at Hotspur Way. No player at that club deserves a trophy more than him.

Perhaps it will come under Postecoglou in the coming years, but that would require signing a new contract.

Son’s current deal expires in 2025 and it’s logical to think, if he extends his stay, then he might just end up finishing his career at the club.
