Newcastle fans are asking for 'an explanation' why Anthony Gordon isn't on the Premier League's Young Player of the Year nominees list.

Despite an underwhelming campaign for the Magpies as a whole, the winger has been a shining light for them, making a huge improvement on his performances from last season.

Following his £45million move from Everton last January, expectations were high for the youngster.

However, he only went on to net once, his side's only goal in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on the final day.

This term, though, Gordon has been key for Eddie Howe's side, scoring 11 goals and netting 11 assists in 46 appearances, earning him his first senior England cap in the process.

Despite all this, the 23-year-old has missed out on being included in the Premier League YPOTY nominees list - and Geordies fans can't believe he's been snubbed and Manchester United youngster Kobbiee Mainoo has been included.

MORE ON PREMIER LEAGUE

"Someone explain to me how Kobbie Mainoo is nominated for young player of the season over Anthony Gordon!!!" one fan wrote on X.

"Mainoo is a good player and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him but AG has had a mad season and a miles better one than him."

A second said: "What made Mainoo be part of this list? He didn't even play half the season. Gordon not here is a disgrace."

"Don't get me wrong, I think he's clearly got talent but having Mainoo on this list over Anthony Gordon is straight up crackers," a third added.

Gordon has been consistent for Howe all season, whilst the Red Devils' own young talent only emerged in late November.

The 19-year-old seriously impressed after his breakthrough at Old Trafford, also receiving a call-up to the England squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March as a result.

Mark Goldbridge praises Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo's debut for England, but saying 'he is the next best thing is silly'

He scored three goals and bagged one assist in 27 appearances for the Man United first team - but Magpies fans still can't see how he gets ahead of their winger.

The vote, which will be cast by fans, involves just eight players who were aged 23 or under at the start of 2023/24 season.

The rest of the nominees include Newcastle's Alexander Isak, Manchester City's Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and William Saliba and Tottenham's Destiny Udogie.

Chelsea's summer signing Palmer scooped up Chelsea's Young Player of the Year and Player of the Year at the Blues' awards ceremony this week.

Meanwhile, Foden picked up the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards.
