Former Leeds United striker fears current on-loan winger faces battle to get in the squad

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan fears that on loan Jack Clarke will struggle to break into the squad according to Football Insider.

Clarke was left out of the matchday squad for last night’s victory over Brentford due to the EFL rules for loan players.

The ex-Leeds United striker expressed his sympathy for the on-loan Tottenham winger as he was omitted from the Leeds squad for the Elland Road clash which was the second consecutive game in which he has missed out completely.

Whelan expressed his disappointment for Clarke: “There is a bit of an issue there for Leeds,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Someone has to forfeit a place on the bench because of the rule and Jack Clarke is the one missing out.”

“This is the choice of Marco Bielsa and it’s something he is going to have to carefully manage. Clarke is a big weapon to have on the bench and is a brilliant player to be able to call upon when you’re chasing a game or opening up defences on the counterattack.”

“If it was up to me, I would forfeit the use of the young goalkeeper Illan Meslier. A back-up keeper is only on the bench for a freak injury. It rarely happens, and Leeds are betting off having a match winner like Clarke.”

“He will be fuming that he’s not being picked, and you can’t blame him for that. I can’t see it changing soon, unless one of the loan players gets injured.”

With Ben White and Jack Harrison named in the starting XI and on loan Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa of Wolves joining the young goalkeeper, this allowed no place for Clarke who will surely be ‘fuming’ at the decision.
