Thomas Tuchel is set to leave Bayern at the end of the season and therefore the German giants will be eyeing his replacement.

Couple Alonso's three seasons at the club as a player with his success at Leverkusen, then the Spaniard appears a likely appointment.

However Hoeness believes that welcoming him back to the Allianz Arena won't be such an easy task ahead of next season.

“I feel that it will be very difficult to sign Xabi Alonso, not to say probably impossible," he told Das Erste via Fabrizio Romano.

He added: "I can certainly imagine him staying at Bayer Leverkusen to continue his job."

Bayern aren't alone in the race for Alonso as Liverpool will be seeking a successor to Jurgen Klopp as he waves goodbye this summer.

The World Cup winner also played for the Reds, with success in the Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup coming his way at Anfield.

Alonso is in hot demand and should Bayern snap him up, they could welcome to man who helped end their Bundesliga dominance.
